HOLY FRIDAY
Good Friday is part of the festivities of Holy Week or Major Week, as the second day of the Easter Triduum after Holy Thursday. This day is commemorated in the Catholic world the passion, crucifixion and death of Jesus, for which several liturgical acts are performed. In various countries it is declared a holiday, not a working day.
Ephemeris of Good Friday
Throughout the day, various religious events are held, attended by hundreds of faithful in order to remember the passion of Christ.
- Trial of Jesus : It is the first liturgical act of the day where the trial that Jesus suffered before Pontius Pilate, who was the Roman governor of the Province of Judea, is recalled. Unable to be judged by Jewish law, the High Priests, the highest hierarchs of religion, take Jesus to Pilate to be judged by Roman law. During the trial he is flogged and a crown of thorns is placed on his head which symbolizes his status as king of the Jews. In some places these events are usually represented.
- Holy Way of the Cross: Jesus was sentenced to death on the cross, which at the time was the greatest punishment to which a prisoner could be sentenced. He too was to carry that cross from the Roman palace to the outskirts of the City of Jerusalem, to a place called Golgotha, where he would be crucified. The Catholic Church called this route the Holy Way of the Cross (Latin word meaning way of the cross), which cost fifteen (15) stations. They commemorate the suffering of Jesus with the cross on his shoulders. It is a liturgy of much recollection and reflection on the part of the clergy and the faithful.
- Liturgy of the Lord's Passion : Also called Liturgy of Adoration of the Holy Cross. It takes place at 3:00 p.m., the moment in which the death of Jesus is estimated to have occurred. It begins with a moment of silence, followed by the liturgy of the word and the adoration of the Holy Cross. During this ceremony, no songs or praises are performed and the ringing of bells is not heard throughout the day.
- Sermon of the Seven Words : It is usually a nocturnal commemoration in which the last words of Jesus on the cross before his death are evoked. According to the Gospels, Jesus being crucified in the midst of two thieves, also crucified, with his mother and his most beloved disciple at the foot of the cross, he pronounced 7 words which evoke his last wishes and the fulfillment of The Holy Scripture. The clergy perform a sermon for each word, giving interpretation to each of them.
- Procession of the Holy Sepulchre: After the seven words, the death of Jesus takes place. The liturgy continues with one of the last stations of the Holy Way of the Cross: "Jesus is taken down from the cross and placed in the arms of his mother." A procession is carried out where Jesus is exposed inside the Holy Sepulchre. With this act the Holy Come ends. It is customary in various places to visit the Holy Sepulcher as a pilgrimage by the faithful. This is done until the next day before the first liturgy of Holy Saturday .
