AFRICA DAY
Africa Day is an annual commemoration held every May 25 and decreed by the African Union, an international entity made up of 55 countries on the continent that seeks unity and solidarity among its inhabitants. The objective of this celebration is to vindicate the struggle of the African peoples against inequality, poverty, slavery and racism.
History of the Africa Day Celebration
After the middle of the 20th century, more than a third of African countries had achieved independence. On May 25, 1963, the then Organization for African Unity (OAU), known today as the African Union, managed to convene a Conference of more than 30 leaders from different free countries of the continent, with the aim of promoting independence. in those African nations that still remained under the domination of European empires. It was decreed to commemorate the Day of African Freedom, and from that moment on, Africa Day is celebrated annually.
African Wrestling Results
Thanks to the union of the leaders of the continent, the vast majority of nations are today free countries. The decolonization process has been gradual, but it has been successful. Today 54 of the 55 African countries are sovereign states (with the exception of Western Sahara, which remains under the political domination of Morocco). And although the achievements that this struggle has obtained are significant, transcendental issues such as migration, civil wars, displacement, forced labor, poverty and racism, among other problems that afflict the continent, are still pending.
However, it is important to highlight what has been obtained during decades of struggle:
- The decolonization of their peoples, in which they have also had the help of the United Nations (UN) and other world organizations.
- The prohibition of slavery. Historically, Africa was the continent that settled the most slaves in the world. Even in the 20th century, human trafficking was a common activity, so one of the bets of the African Union was to radically end slavery in its territory.
- Search for economic development and eradication of poverty. In Africa there are several of the poorest countries in the world and it is there where several organizations, many of them altruistic, implement actions in order to reduce this scourge.
- Policies to reduce hunger. It is one of the main problems, where the figures of child malnutrition are the most alarming in the world.
- Recognition of ethnic groups. After achieving the independence of the vast majority of countries, it was sought to give rise to the more than 2000 ethnic groups distributed throughout the territory, giving value to their ancestral traditions, their knowledge and their work in agriculture.
- Peace in the territories. After decolonization, there were big problems in some regions of the continent. This was mainly due to the fact that the empires that had their seat there arbitrarily established the borders, ignoring the formation of the peoples. This generated civil wars that threatened to destabilize the population. One of the objectives of African leaders has been to make agreements in order to maintain peace on the continent.
